Sheet piling cofferdam is a special form of temporary engineering solution where the main purpose of the cofferdam is to remove soil and/or water to form a safe support excavation where construction work can proceed.
A cofferdam is a basic waterproof enclosure consisting of steel sheet piles and structural support components, allowing substructures to be built in waterways or other areas that must be isolated from the surrounding environment. Sheet piles are part of a monolithic structural system that resists earth pressure and hydraulic pressure. Some cofferdams may require bracing, struts, beams, ties and deadheads to maintain acceptable pressure on the members while allowing no more than 2 inches of deflection at the top of the slab per contract documentation.
Why use steel sheet piles for cofferdams?
The strength of steel is its core advantage in cofferdam construction. Cofferdams can consist of a single sheet pile wall or a double sheet pile wall with sheet piles tied together for added strength, often with gravel inserted in the gaps between.
Braced cofferdams are typically used for land excavation work where the sheet piles are supported with purlins and struts for added strength and resilience.
Another reason for using sheet piles in cofferdam construction is that they can be easily installed during construction and then removed when construction is complete. Their reusability means they can be transferred to the next project that wishes to benefit from their resilience and adaptability to many different environments.
What kinds of open water projects use sheet pile cofferdams?
Cofferdams can be used for projects around piers, locks, dams and docks, but they can also be used in open water areas where the water table is high and could cause water to enter the excavation and endanger people working in it. Whether to use a single sheet pile wall or a double wall usually depends on the size of the excavation and the depth of the surrounding water. Sheet pile walls need to be able to withstand both the hydraulic forces of the water and the dynamic forces that may come from waves and currents to ensure the safety of construction personnel. The steel sheet pile walls used around the cofferdam need to be able to resist the lateral pressures of bending forces, regardless of how these bending forces are generated.
What is the process of constructing an offshore cofferdam with sheet piles?
The first step is to level the ground and remove any soil or silt that may interfere with the structure. Temporary support piles (these are usually made of steel) can then be driven in, and a temporary support frame can then be built on top of these piles. Sheet piles are then driven into the structure and tied down if necessary.
Excavation work begins while the water is still inside the structure and once the ground level is reached, a submerged concrete plug is installed. Once installed in place, the cofferdam can be dewatered and the required work can then be performed. Once completed, the process is reversed and the cofferdam is refilled with water before the sheet piles and supports are removed.
Cofferdams have proven to be a beneficial solution for sheet piling in both temporary and permanent projects, although it is the former that really highlights its sustainable, recyclable nature.
Cofferdams are primarily used for the construction of bridge foundations, underground storage tanks, drive and reception pits, land outfall structures, utility diversion schemes, and any deep excavation on land or water where safe access is often required for construction work.
